Storytelling and Social Change: A Strategy Guide for Grantmakers

September 12, 2013

Grantee News From Working Narratives:

STORYTELLING AND SOCIAL CHANGE: A STRATEGY GUIDE FOR GRANTMAKERS is the first comprehensive publication of its kind. Based on over 75 interviews with grantmakers, communications experts and storytellers of all sorts, the guide serves grantmakers interested in so-called “narrative strategies” for their funding and communications programs.

The guide looks at the recent history of storytelling and social change; reviews the theories of change behind this work; provides case studies of 10 projects and their funders; offers guidance on every stage of grantmaking; includes sidebar interviews and other features; and lists resources for additional exploration.

The guide also features a foreword by playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith, and an afterword from philanthropy expert Gara LaMarche. Activists, storytellers and others outside the field of philanthropy will find it useful as well.

* Use the signup form at the top of this page to download the guide. *

This project is supported in part by funding from the Brimstone Grant as administered by the National Storytelling Network. Many thanks also to the Nathan Cummings Foundation for support of this guide and of Working Narratives.
