Chizumba Shepande, 2007 Fellow

Biography:
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy from the Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, Russia. I received a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources Management with specialization in Soil Information systems from the International Institute of Geo-Information science and Earth Observation in the Netherlands.

Before coming to the University of Minnesota, I worked as a researcher and instructor at the Natural Resources Development College in Zambia.

Research Focus:
The intent of my research is to study methods of measuring, analyzing, and managing land resources and also to recommend uses of land resources in a rational and equitable way using techniques of land use analysis and planning. On this basis, my study will undertake, using GIS, remote sensing and terrain analysis techniques to map land units and to grade them according to their qualities. In this way, land resources could be used in different ways according to their potential.

An additional effort will be directed toward soil mapping in the study area using aerial photographs and satellite images. These soil mapping units would be good tools for farmers and land planners to decide which crops to grow and where. This will provide farmers, land use planners, and policy makers with a means to quickly and easily assess the nature of variability of land resources and divide areas into meaningful management zones.
