Assan Sarr, 2007 Fellow

Biography:
I am a third year student in the doctoral program in African History at Michigan State University's Department of History. Before attending MSU, I was at Ohio University pursuing a Masters degree in African Studies. This I completed in the summer of 2005.

I received a BA in History (Hon.) and Development Studies from University of The Gambia in 2004. I was also fortunate to be able to visit the St. Mary's College of Maryland as the first University of The Gambia student to participate in an exchange program between these two institutions. Over the summer of 2003, I participated in an archaeological field school run by the college, supervising an excavation of a site in Old St. Mary's City.

Research Focus:
My current research interests focus on the importance of land ownership in the history of pre-colonial and colonial lower Gambian societies. I am particularly interested on the changing notions of property ownership and the conflicts and tensions associated with such developments. I am also interested on how land was used in the creation of dependencies and how that changed overtime.
