Biographical sketch:
Shane M. Khan is a Master’s of Public Health student at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He was born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago and came to the U.S. to pursue his university education. With a passion for languages and culture, he has studied and traveled throughout parts of North Africa, Western Europe and the Caribbean. It was while interning in Washington, DC, in international affairs that he became interested in global problems in health and inequity. Following the internship, Shane decided to dedicate his advanced studies to the improvement of marginalized populations.

Shane’s current work examines the stigma associated with tuberculosis in Lima, Peru. Stigma may contribute to lengthy delays in disease diagnosis, seeking treatment and abandonment of treatment. Specifically, the study will examine the reactions of the community, the family, and the partners of infected individuals once people have been diagnosed.  Stigma itself may place women in economically and socially difficult situations. As such, for each of these topics, his research will also explore whether there are gender-based variations in the reactions toward tuberculosis sufferers.
