Home Country: Mexico

Carlos’ research area focuses on the fisheries in Patzcuaro Lake in Michoacán, México. In the last 10 years the catch fisheries in the lake have diminished. Possible causes could be the living conditions of the fisher people, -predominance of poor people-, the high market price or value of endemic species. Previously, the native communities around the lake were able to maintain a sustainable fishing living. What happened in the last years with the fishing in Patzcuaro Lake?

The research for this project focuses on the viability for establishing catch limits, which will allow the management at the fisheries to promote stainable development, and it will improve the quality of life for the fishermen and their families. Carlos will make a Bioeconomic Model in order to analyze institutional arrangements between native communities and government to establish a sustainable fish capture that guarantees resources for the next generation, and improves the quality of life for current residents.
