Akura is a Research Assistant, his duties involve curriculum development and instruction for various projects including the Nairobi-St. Louis Cultural Exchange Program (NASCEP) and the Linking Food and the Environment (LiFE ) program. LiFE is a National Institute of Health funded Inquiry-Based Science and Nutrition Education Program designed to make scientific literacy a realistic goal for children living in urban poverty. Akura has taught high school biology and geography in Kenya, his home country. He completed a summer internship with Population Action International (PAI) where he used PAI research material as a basis for producing lesson plans to be used in the teaching of environmental conservation and population issues in Kenya.

Akura is currently doing research on the use of reform based professional development programs to help science teachers working in poor urban areas to more effectively use constructivist teaching strategies in their classrooms.
