Javier de la Cruz, 2001 Fellow

Javier de la Cruz

Javier was born in Guaymas, Mexico. He studied economics at the University of Sonora. He has participated in projects (financed by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Conservation International Mexico) related to artisan fishing and questions of fisheries co-management, in the Gulf of California region. He has worked in fishing communities off the coast of Sonora, which lead to his thesis work entitled: "Institutional Economic and Small Fishing: The case of Bay of Kino. 1994-1998". The line of investigation Javier has followed during his academic life has been the fishing economy, with emphasis on the social, cultural and environmental aspects of fishing in the Gulf of California. Currently, Javier is enrolled in the Masters program in Environmental Management, at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. His thesis is entitled "Small Fishing in The Upper Gulf of California Biosphere Reserve: Economic Performance, Ecological Conservation and Conflict of Interests".
