Carbon Offsets

Offsetting project travel means calculating the greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels burned in driving or flying from place to place, and investing in projects that reduce emissions somewhere else -- with the goal of achieving no net emissions. A useful site for calculating emissions is www.carboncounter.org. A good overall description of what an offset is in more detail can be found on the Tufts Climate Initiative (although this information is specifically targeted toward just air travel). Ideally, we would all drive and fly less. This is an intermediate measure to address those practices that we cannot yet change. Realistically, most offset projects are as much about climate change education as they are about real greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Offsets are offered for sale by a plethora of for-profits and non-profits, but almost all of them charge between $5 and $20 per ton of CO2. According to a recent study, Native Energy and the Climate Trust are among the best domestic offset providers.
